¡HICA! Calls for Release of Community Advocate Giovanna Hernandez Martinez

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama (¡HICA!) expresses deep concern following the detention of Giovanna Hernandez Martinez, who was taken into ICE custody on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, after a traffic stop in Leeds, Alabama.

Giovanna is a valued member of the ¡HICA! community. As an organization, we are proud to work with her and her business, Juntos Coaching and Consulting, to empower youth across Alabama. She has consistently demonstrated integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to expanding educational opportunities for young people. Her leadership has inspired countless students to pursue their goals and has strengthened communities across our state.

“Giovanna is not only a trusted community partner, she is a role model,” said Dr. Carlos E. Alemán, CEO of ¡HICA!. “She brings purpose and heart to everything she does. Her contributions have touched families and young people throughout Alabama, and her detention is a painful loss for the entire community.”

Since the moment of her detention, ¡HICA! has been working tirelessly alongside Giovanna’s family to support her in every possible way. The first 48 hours were focused on helping them navigate immediate legal and emotional challenges, and on discreetly reaching out to state representatives and key decision-makers to advocate for her release. We want to be clear: ¡HICA! is not stepping away from this situation. This is not about us — it’s about Giovanna’s safety, her dignity, and the well-being of her family. We understand and share the concern many are feeling. All we ask is for continued trust as we work with care, discretion, and intention.

To continue supporting Giovanna, we need the community’s help. Letters of support and financial contributions will make a direct impact on her case and provide critical relief to her family during this incredibly difficult time. We invite anyone who is able to donate or write a letter to stand in solidarity with Giovanna and the values she represents. Her family has created a go fund me please support here  https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-giovanna-a-community-advocate-in-need?utm_campaign=fp

¡HICA! stands in full support of Giovanna and calls for her immediate release. We urge immigration authorities to consider her longstanding contributions and act with humanity and fairness. Giovanna’s voice is vital, and her presence is needed in the communities she so selflessly serves.

Sincerely,

Carlos E. Alemán, Ph.D .
