¡HICA! Continues to Plead for the Release and Bond of Beloved Youth Advocate and DREAMer, Giovanna Hernandez Martinez
For Immediate Release:
BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama (¡HICA!) is calling on the immigration judge presiding over Giovanna Hernandez Martinez’s case to approve her bond, release her from detention, and return her safely to her family and our community. Giovanna, a beloved youth advocate, educator, and DREAMer, has called Alabama home for more than a decade and is an indispensable part of our community.
“She is a dreamer in every sense of the word,” said Dr. Carlos E. Alemán, CEO of ¡HICA!. “Her contributions have changed lives, and her detention is a profound loss, not just to her loved ones, but to all of us who benefit from her leadership, compassion, and hope. We are urging the court to approve her bond and release her so she can return to her family and the community that needs her.”
Giovanna came to the United States as a child, grew up in Alabama, attending local schools from elementary through high school, before earning both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work from Jacksonville State University. Her professional journey has included campus leadership roles, social work internships, and partnerships with schools and nonprofits. Giovanna is also bilingual in English and Spanish, allowing her to connect with families and students who are often overlooked or underserved.
Those who know Giovanna often speak of her warmth and energy. That spirit shines through all she does, from mentoring students to supporting friends and family. Her deep love for her community is a constant source of motivation, reflected in the way she treats others with empathy, generosity, and grace. Whether she is coaching a student, offering quiet encouragement, or showing up when it matters most, Giovanna leads with her whole heart.
One of her most impactful recent efforts was organizing a career fair for students from 8th through 12th grade, bringing in professionals from diverse fields to share their journeys. That day, every student in the room felt seen because Giovanna made sure they knew they mattered.
Now, Giovanna needs her community to speak out and demand her freedom.
