These beloved spaces exist today thanks to the tireless efforts and unwavering support of our local community members. Today, we continue that legacy by managing and maintaining these vital areas through a strong partnership between the Jefferson County Greenways Commission and the Jefferson County Greenways Foundation.
Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Propagation Specialist is a temporary workforce development position and will work directly under the Conservation Director to propagate native plants for projects such as Cool Green Trees and native plant sales. This is a 2 year temporary role but may have an option for longer term employment. Horticulture background and/or experiences are not required. This position may work with full-time, seasonal or volunteer personnel to accomplish tasks in at least 2 JCG locations throughout Jefferson County. This position will be primarily recruited from the CEJST (Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool) areas of Jefferson County, AL where the Cool Green Trees installations are taking place as part of the USDA Urban Forest Grant with CAWACO.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Propagate native plants for Cool Green Trees, restoration projects, plant sales and other specific client needs
Identify native plants and seasonality of propagule for collections
Assist with greenhouse facilities and/or growing environment
Maintain clean and operational work station
Assist with crop inventory and maintaining records, including daily and crop logs
Assist with propagation goals set by the supervisor
Maintain optimal plant health while monitoring for disease and pest issues
Prepare and implement media (soils) and fertilizers according to specific plant needs
Maintain equipment and systems necessary to propagate and grow native plants
Manage organization and use of growing containers and trays and other equipment
SCHEDULE & PAY:
Hourly, Full-time position: 36 - 40 hours per week
Tuesday - Saturday
Pay: $36,000 per year
Paid Holidays, Paid Time Off - starting at 18 days a year
Health//Dental Coverage (100% of individual premiums paid by JeffCo Greenways)

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Passion for native plants and their environmental relationships
Desire to learn to identify native plants of Alabama - specifically of Jefferson County
Ability to perform manual tasks required for the position such as: bending, lifting, reaching, etc.
Ability to take clear, concise records and communicate effectively - verbal and written
Ability to meet deadlines and stay on task
Desire to learn propagation techniques and develop propagation skills
Comfort working independently or ability to work with others including staff, volunteers, students and program attendees
Ability to learn software for data records, inventory management and/or point of sale
Ability to use variety of hand and power tools and equipment
