Job Description: JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director, Associate Director, and Children’s/Teen Librarian, assists with and leads programs for all ages. Markets library programs and services. Performs all basic circulation duties and assists patrons with library services and resources.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Under the direction of the professional staff, assists with and leads programs for children, teens, and adults in the library and at off-site locations.
• Markets library programs and services through platforms such as social media, digital signage within the library, the library website, print materials, outreach events.
• Greets and assists library patrons with a welcoming demeanor.
• Helps patrons find and check out library material.
• Helps patrons use library technology and access the library’s resources.
• Effectively performs all circulation functions including checking items in and out; updating patron records; and creating cards for new library patrons.
• Collects and processes money for late fines and other charges.
• Counts and records cash register balances when needed.
• Answers phones in a courteous and professional manner.
• Answers basic questions and refers more complex questions to appropriate staff as needed.
• Attends and participates in relevant meetings and training sessions, both in the library and at other locations.
• Serves as backup for duties of other staff members as needed.
• Assumes other duties and projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and Skills:
• Knowledge of standard library procedures
• Proficiency in business English, spelling, and math
• Knowledge of library-related software and proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office applications, Canva, and various mobile devices such as E-readers, tablets and smartphones.
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Comfortable promoting the library and speaking in front of large groups
• Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication
• Commitment to providing excellent customer service
Abilities:
• Ability to stay current on library and marketing trends
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and patrons.
• Ability and willingness to pay attention to detail and to ask questions when unsure
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
• Ability to exercise judgment/discretion when dealing with public/staff
• Ability to work with minimal instruction/supervision
• Ability to sit, reach, bend, stoop, stand for long periods
• Ability to push, pull, and maneuver book trucks with 50 pounds of weight
• Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, including setting up and taking down tables and chairs
• Ability to see clearly for shelving and computer work
• Available to work evenings and Saturdays as schedule requires
• Clean driving record and ability to safely drive the library’s vehicle as well as navigate to sites throughout Jefferson County (Chevrolet Equinox, no CDL required)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
• Two years of progressive, responsible related experience
• Previous library experience
HOURS AND BENEFITS
40 hours per week, including some evenings and Saturdays in rotation with other staff. While we will strive to provide a predictable schedule, flexibility is a must.
